Rocking The Boat: Smoke, Sirens & Silence Between SAFR And SASP

On June 8th, 2026, the sound of explosions echoed across Los Santos after the S.S. Bulker was sabotaged while docked at the Western Port Terminal. The vessel quickly took on water before sinking to the seabed. 

The large situation ended up involving multiple agents from government agencies in order to contain the scene. However, on July 19th, a press release relating to the incident was released by the San Andreas Fire Rescue (SAFR) (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JcUXuZVmA6VatGe7AaGATAl9EUp5KzWj/view?usp=drive_link) discussing the conduct of the San Andreas State Police (SASP) at the scene and the consequences of these actions.

The press release issued by Talia Lyons of SAFR describes how SASP proceeded to block emergency responders from accessing the scene while fires raged on inside the S.S. Bulker. As with any emergency, every minute counts. In this case, the delays allowed the fires to spread further, escalating an already dangerous situation and ultimately resulting in the complete loss of the transport vessel.

During the incident, it is said that individuals from the State Police proceeded to sweep the boat looking for more explosives while “Fire Rescue’s expertise and knowledge about fires were disregarded by the State Police for them to attempt to continue to lead a scene they did not have the equipment or knowledge to safely deal with.” Not only did this lead to the ship inevitably being engulfed in flames fully, but it also put themselves at immense danger in a situation they were not trained to deal with.

Within hours of the original press release from San Andreas Fire Rescue, the San Andreas State Police responded with their own (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VVos4MTNxwzbh3RjA347QC1rf1RcdPuS/view). A key point the statement made was that the “San Andreas State Police stands firmly by the decision made by those officers on that day. The actions were made based on the information available at the time and our obligation to mitigate an active explosive and hostile threat before exposing additional responders to immediate danger.” They also went on to discuss how it is a normal practice for members of the SASP to ensure that a scene is safe while having members of SAFR “staged at a safe location until officers on scene have determined the area was secure.” 

However, this raises two important questions: Should this remain standard practice? Or is it time to reassess existing protocols to better protect both first responders and the citizens of San Andreas?

Weazel News proceeded to reach out to the Federal Marshals Service to see if they wanted to comment on the press releases, and while they refused to comment on specifics for the situation, they did want to let the press know that they “do hope that the concerns raised can be addressed through good communication and cooperation.”

On July 23rd, 2026, Weazel News sat down with Governor Bellarosa Muratori, Lieutenant Governor Amber Dent, and Secretary of State Elsie Shaw to ask the view of the Governor’s office on the whole matter. 

During this interview, there was regret expressed that the matter had led to the press release from SAFR, as the hope is that government agencies can discuss these things together without proceeding to such bold gestures as was the case in this matter. 

Governor Bellarosa Muratori explained to Weazel News that approximately two weeks before SAFR released its statement, she had been ” […] contacted by a member of SAFR command […] they mentioned the miscommunication in passing but that they were optimistic that they would be in contact with the State Police.” At that time, she said, there was no indication that SAFR was considering issuing a public press release.

However, the Governor’s Office later came to understand that the miscommunication between San Andreas Fire Rescue and the San Andreas State Police had escalated to the point where SAFR “felt it was necessary […]” to issue the statement, bringing the dispute into the public eye.

The interview also revealed that, following the release of both agencies’ statements, representatives from San Andreas Fire Rescue and the San Andreas State Police met to discuss the incident. According to Lieutenant Governor Amber Dent,“[…] it was a very healthy conversation between the two departments… both teams were willing to open up and work with each other the entire time […]”. She also emphasised how professional both parties had been in these discussions and how it was promising to see them working towards no situation like this recurring.

Secretary of State Elsie Shaw stated that “[…] sometimes you just need these situations to happen so that we can all learn how to get better at communication […].”

The Governor’s Office also stated that they believed that at this time there was no need for a push for any sort of official investigation into the handling of the situation at the S.S. Bulker on June 8th, but that they were committed to continuing to support not just SAFR and SASP to continue working on better communication, but to support all the government agencies across the state as well.

The biggest takeaway from this was admission from the San Andreas State Police of a communication breakdown and that “[…] communication following the situation was not to the department’s standards […]”

Only time will tell whether this renewed push for improved communication between departments will endure or if the situation will be swept under the rug as they “[…] look forward to putting the S.S Bulker situation behind them and focusing on future opportunities to collaborate […]”. All that can be done is hope that a similar situation won’t happen again.
