Dear Dolores,
This is gonna sound bad, how do you get bloodstains out of a shirt? I fell off a bridge and received medical help but now I have terrible stains!

Dear Anonymous,
Why would that sound bad? I’ve always said there isn’t enough emphasis placed on learning these common household chores in regular education. Removing blood from clothing is something that most women have some expertise in, so let me give you the rundown on the best way to save your favorite garments:

  1. Remove excess blood. If it’s still wet, rinse the article under cold water. If the stain is dry, brush it with a toothbrush or a fingernail to remove the excess.
  2. Pre-treat
    1. Fresh blood stains: Apply an enzyme based, bleach free detergent to the affected area and soak for up to 30 mins.
    2. Dry blood stains on light clothing: Dab some hydrogen peroxide onto the affected area.
    3. Dry blood stains on all clothing: Mix a paste of baking soda and water, scrub it into the stain and let it sit for up to 30 mins.
  3. Launder: Wash your clothing as normal. It is important to not dry your clothes until the stain is completely gone. If it is not gone after these steps, repeat as needed.
